The 2014 MELTA Smart Kids Way with Words Competition

The 2014 MELTA Smart Kids Way With Words Competition was held in conjunction with the 12th Asia TEFL International Conference and the 23rd MELTA International Conference in Borneo Convention Centre, Kuching (BCCK), Sarawak on 30th August, 2014. Eighteen teams from various secondary schools in Kuching participated in the competition. SMK Pending was no exception. The school sent two teams made up of students from the lower secondary levels; Ting Guan Yan, Spencer Chee Te-Inng and Lim Jia Xin in Team C, and Ho Chung Lung, Vanessa Sim and Chelsea Lau in Team E. They were accompanied by Cikgu Ambrose Cyril Tai and Cikgu Sim Siaw Phing.

The MELTA Smart Kids Way With Words Competition was first held in 2008, in line with MELTA’s vision to assist the government in promoting the English language among Malaysians. The aims of the competition are to help students improve their spelling, enhance their vocabulary bank and develop correct English usage. It is hoped that through such a competition, students will see for themselves how the power of words can help them to shape their way of thinking and advance to greater heights.

Apart from having the privilege to join the competition, our children also took part in a few other activities held in conjunction with the 12th Asia TEFL International Conference and the 23rd MELTA International Conference.

Though our teams did not fare well in the competition, the children were all victors in their own right. Their calm composure throughout the competition must be lauded. When asked to reflect about their performance, all agreed unanimously that they had learnt a great deal from the competition. Kudos to our teams!
